Students of The Montessori School of the Berkshires (MSB) enrich our community. Nestled among field and forest, MSB provides hands-on, individualized education for toddlers through eighth graders. Montessori education helps children become responsible, caring learners and community members who are self-motivated, confident, independent, and creative. MSB's green campus and LEED building allow children to learn about sustainability both within the classroom and out of doors. Known throughout the world, the Montessori method of education is based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman physician in Italy during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The method emphasizes self-directed activity and independence on the part of the child and observation and guidance on the part of the teacher. Children have access to the natural world through garden areas and trails, as well as caring for plants and animals throughout the classroom and campus. Dr. Montessori considered this connection to the earth and living things to be an essential part of education. At MSB, you will often see Children's House students sweeping their patio, Toddlers feeding the chickens, or Elementary students studying in the courtyard. Montessori students enrich our community -- You may come across their Adolescent students visiting residents at Kimball Farms, working with Community Access to the Arts, or apprenticing with local business owners.Your tax-deductible donation will help support valuable educational programs.
